In The News

Although there were no banjo players in the Legendary folk band Planxty!! they were one of the first bands to entice me into Irish music. Great news they have announced the release of a new retrospective collection called “Planxty : Between the Jigs and Reels”. It will be a CD/DVD combination, with lots of rare footage of the group. The band formed in 1972 consisting initially of Christy Moore (vocals, acoustic guitar, bodhrán), Andy Irvine (vocals, mandolin, mandola, bouzouki, hurdy-gurdy, harmonica),Dónal Lunny (bouzouki, guitars, bodhrán, keyboards), and Liam O’Flynn (uilleann pipes, tin whistle). Subsequently, Johnny Moynihan, Paul Brady, Matt Molloy (flute), Bill Whelan(keyboards), Nollaig Casey (fiddle) and, briefly, Noel Hill (concertina) and Tony Linnane (fiddle) were also temporary members.

Pure Banjo Workshop

Keeping busy these days in the banjo workshop, lots of restorations going on. I’m always on the look out for spare banjo parts so if you have an old beat up banjo it could be worth a few quid in parts. Just drop me an email here

 Summer of Irish Music

Is your banjo sounding like it should. Banjos will need a periodic set-up to keep them playing at their best. If you can’t carry out this work yourself then this is what I do best. Just drop me a quick email and I can arrange a time slot to setup your banjo. Typical setups will include

  • disassembly for cleaning & reassembly including resetting/replacing the head
  • Changing strings
  • Action height
  • Bridge slots
  • Nut slots
  • Fret condition
  • Tailpiece position/condition
  • Loose hardware

If you are on the look out for some different I have a few vintage tenor banjos for sale. I may also be interested in trade-ins against a vintage banjo I have for sale, click on the photo

Tenor Banjo Workshop With Stevie Dunne.

The very talented Stevie Dunne shared his banjo style techniques to a full capacity of inspired banjo enthusiasts at the Belfast Trad Banjo workshop last Saturday afternoon. Great tunes & tips to take with us after 4 hours of pure banjo mastery….cheers Stevie

Each year the Belfast Trad Society host a banjo workshop among others held at the crescent arts centre. This year we hosted Stevie Dunne who’s style and repertoire are strongly influenced by Ulster role models such as Cathal Hayden, Martin Hayes and Josephine Keegan. As a follow up to the class I have included some audio samples and video recordings from the workshop, many thanks to Phil and Kevin for that.
